Predicting the future number 1 in men’s singles is difficult. There are too many variables to take into account. Hence, being merely human, our best prediction would be an educated guess coupled with a whole lot of bias.
That’s why we thought we’d ask four prominent AI tools the question: which male singles badminton player is most likely to become the world number 1 in July of 2028. (see the result below)
When you ask AI tools to predict who will sit at the pinnacle of the BWF Men’s Singles world rankings two years from now, you get four distinct approaches to solving the badminton ranking puzzle.
Our AI lineup consists of ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Grok. Each AI tool attacks this particular badminton ranking question through a different lens:
- ChatGPT balances quantitative point mechanics with market trends and injury variables.
- Gemini dives deep into structured data arrays, raw tournament stats, and head-to-head metrics.
- Claude crafts narrative-driven tactical evaluations, weighing big-stage psychology and player durability.
- Grok taps into real-time sports chatter, raw social sentiment, and current player momentum.
Predicting the World No. 1 spot in men’s singles on a 24-month horizon requires sifting through the top tier. And then modeling the trajectory of contenders ranked between 5 and 25 on the July 2026 BWF ranking.
Young players Alex Lanier, Victor Lai, Li Shi Feng, Lin Chun-yi, and Ayush Shetty are some of the contenders for the coveted future number 1 spot in men’s singles.
On paper, mathematical models point to specific physical peaks and Super 1000/500 point ceilings. In reality, modern singles is an unforgiving grind defined by sudden form surges, tactical evolution, and unpredictable physical tax. Add to that the luck of the draw.
Let’s dive into the predictions, the numbers, and the contenders fighting to claim the top spot.
The AI’s predict differently – just like humans
What you see in the table above are four relatively different AI takes on the men’s singles ranking in 2028
Do you agree with the AI prediction above?
Interestingly, two AI tools are extremely confident in their predictions. Gemini and ChatGPT predict a whopping 35% and 45% probability for Alex Lanier to reach the world number 1 spot. Claude and Grok are much less confident. They max out at 18% and 20%.
As you can see, the combined prediction of the four AI models has Alex Lanier as the player most likely to achieve the number 1 rank in July 2028.
On the other end of the spectrum is Loh Ken Yew. He wasn’t mentioned by Gemini and Claude. Chat GPT, on the other hand, predicts Loh to be more likely to become world number 1 than Lin Chun-yi and Ayush Shetty.
I can beat the AI tools, can you?
I personally disagree with most of ChatGPT’s predictions, but I must applaud “Chat” for believing in Alwi Farhan, where the other three didn’t.
The former World Junior Champion has a real shot at it, but we can’t rule out that he might crumble under the pressure from Indonesian media and fans. Especially if Christie and Ginting decide to retire.
That said, let’s not forget Indonesia’s Zaki Ubaidillah. None of the AI tools mentioned Ubaidillah, but he too has a real shot at reaching inside the top 10 on the BWF ranking.
In my opinion, Alex Lanier will not make it to the top of the world ranking in men’s singles. Neither will Loh, Naraoka, Lakshya Sen or Li Shifeng.
My bet, so to speak, is on Christo Popov, Victor Lai, or Alwi Farhan. Of the three youngsters, I’ll give Alwi Farhan a 30% probability, Victor Lai 40% probability, and Christo Popov a 50% probability of becoming world number 1 at the latest by July 2028.
